EPA Lead-Safe Certification Program

On June 17 and 18, 2011 Members of Local Union 31 participated in the 8 Hour EPA's Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule Certification Program at the OP&CMIA Western Pennsylvania Training Facility.

Instructors from the Center to Protect Workers Rights (CPWR), accredited by the EPA, provided an in-depth understanding of the new EPA Regulations concerning Lead based paint in renovations.

Local 31 offeres a laundry list of safety training to meet the requirements of our customers. However, unlike other safety training, this certification is the law of the land. Employers must obtain this certification where applicable or face severe penalties from the EPA.

The Members who successfully completed the course have placed themselves in the unique postion of giving our Employers the ablility to remain in legal compliance with the new EPA Regulations. Each Member that successfully completed the course is now certified and will be placed on the "Individuals Certified in Lead-Based Paint Occupations" list at the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, Occupational and Industrial Safety website.

In addition to class room training, Members took part in multiple hands-on activities including preparation, containment and clean-up of Lead Renovation activities.

The class was coordinated by the OP&CMIA and funded by a grant from the EPA.

We strongly encourage all Members to consider participating when another course is scheduled.
